Formula & source

Required pace = goal seconds ÷ 21.0975 km
Split at mile M = goal seconds × M / 13.1094

Source: half marathon = 21.0975 km (13.1094 mi), exactly half the World Athletics marathon standard. Unique to this page: one-click preset goals from 1:30 to 2:30 plus a fully custom input, with mile splits (the unit most US race courses mark).

Worked example (you can verify by hand)

Input: goal 2:00:00 (7200 s).

  1. Required pace: 7200 ÷ 21.0975 = 341.3 s/km = 5:41/km
  2. Per mile: 341.3 × 1.60934 = 549.2 s = 9:09/mile
  3. Mile 10 split: 7200 × 10 / 13.1094 = 5492.3 s = 1:31:32

Expected output: hold 5:41/km; mile 10 at 1:31:32.

Limitations — what this cannot do

  • GPS watches and phone apps typically err by 1–3% on distance; a track-measured time trial is the honest input.
  • Hills, heat, altitude and wind change real-world pace — charts assume flat, sea-level, calm conditions.
  • Predictions assume similar training and conditions; they are estimates, not guarantees.

FAQ

What is a good half marathon time?

Sub-2:00 is the classic recreational benchmark; sub-1:30 is strong club level. First-timers often land 2:15–2:45 — finishing healthy beats any number.

How should I pace a half marathon?

Even effort, not even pace: run the first 5K a touch conservatively, settle into goal pace through 15K, then race what is left. Hills and wind matter more than the chart.

Why mile splits instead of km splits?

Most US courses mark miles. If your watch is metric, use the per-km pace from the calculator and check 5K splits instead.

How long to train for a half marathon?

12 weeks from a 15–20 km/week base is typical; 16 weeks if you are building from scratch. The chart tells you the pace — training earns it.
