Formula & source
kph = 60 ÷ (min/km as decimal)
mph = kph ÷ 1.60934
Source: the international mile (1.60934 km) and the definition speed = distance ÷ time. Unique to this page: pace inputs accept minutes + seconds separately (5:30, not 5.5), which is how runners actually talk.
Worked example (you can verify by hand)
Input: 5:00 min/km.
- Seconds: 5 × 60 = 300 s/km
- min/mile: 300 × 1.60934 = 482.8 s = 8:03/mile
- kph: 3600 ÷ 300 = 12.00; mph: 12 ÷ 1.60934 = 7.46
Expected output: 5:00/km = 8:03/mile = 12.00 kph = 7.46 mph.
Limitations — what this cannot do
- Pace and speed are reciprocals — small pace changes mean bigger speed changes at the fast end.
- Treadmill 'mph' is belt speed; outdoor mph includes air resistance — treat them as different sports.

FAQ
How do I convert 8:00/mile to min/km?
Divide by 1.60934: 8:00/mile ≈ 4:58/km. Type it in the converter above — pace units take minutes and seconds separately.
Is 10 kph the same as 6:00/km?
Exactly: 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00/km. And 10 kph = 6.21 mph.
Why do race paces use min/km but treadmills use mph?
Road running descends from metric athletics; treadmills from the US fitness market. The converter exists because both refuse to die.
What pace is a 7-minute mile in kph?
About 13.8 kph (8.57 mph) — enter 7:00 min/mile above to see all four.
